Released during Fèis Ìle 2015 and marking the distillery's 200th anniversary, for this special edition of Laphroaig Cairdeas Master Distiller John Campbell used 100% floor malted barley (from the distillery's own small malting floor) and used only the two smaller, older stills during distillation! It was matured in ex-bourbon casks for around a dozen years.
Laphroaig is named for the area of land at the head of Loch Laphroaig on the south coast of the Isle of Islay. The name may be related to a placename on the east coast of Islay, "Pròaig", again suggested as meaning "broad bay". The distillery and brand are owned and operated by Beam Suntory, the American subsidiary of Japan's Suntory Holdings.

Nose: Initially a sweet note of red apple blossom moving quickly into a rich cask char flavour. Rock salt followed by creamy seaweed and dried apricots and then a dry, lingering finish.
Palate: Earthy peat, then a fruity salty combination and huge iodine and black pepper feeling that runs all the way through the initial phase of Cairdeas 2015. The never ending peaty tones move slightly into a liquorice toffee note and it really has amazing depth and balance between the peat, fruit, sweet and dry flavours. Berried oak finish.
